Andrea Okwesa

Andrea Okwesa is an experienced, professional Audio Describer (AD). Since initial training in 2004, she has researched, written, and voiced AD scripts in all performing arts genres, and for community-based events, museums, meetings, conferences, and social media. One of her main clients has been John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts since 2006, in addition to the Smithsonian Institution, the National Park Service, Signature Theatre, and more. Andrea has also worked as a describer on cruise ships, provided Human Guide services to individuals, and trained/coached audio describers. She currently serves on the Advisory Committee to establish Certification for Audio Describers in the US. In 2018, she launched SightlinesAD to provide a unique range of community-based AD offerings in addition to traditional services.

During her long career as an Audio Describer, she has gained extensive experience and proficiency in all aspects of AD scriptwriting for a broad range of clients. Her guiding principle has been to apply skills in concentration and observation to produce simple, clear, objective, and concise descriptions, using accurate, precise, logically structured, and context-specific language, as the circumstances dictate.  The subject matter areas in which she has worked draw from different performing arts genres, community events, art, cultural and heritage installations, and exhibits. Her mantra and her company’s slogan is: “If I can see it, I can describe it… If I can describe it, you will see it.”
