Artist Statement:
Urban landscapes, for me, are repositories of personal and collective memories. Shifts in Urban Landscape (2021-present), my latest series of paintings, references the serendipitous connections made during my walks around the neighborhood after moving to Lawrenceville from Singapore during the height of Covid in mid-2020.
In these works, I explore ways to render my perspective of space and form through geometric abstraction. The geometric shapes form an uncluttered and calm space in these tumultuous times.
By distilling cityscapes into abstract forms, I endeavor to subvert the traditional genre of landscape painting, thereby challenging the viewer’s expectations of the work of art, and inviting new interpretations of the ordinary and the everyday.
