A little bit about Kyrie
What’s your most memorable Pittsburgh art moment from the last decade?
I’ve got to say the gigantic rubber duck by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman that was in the water down by the Point in 2013. Because the world is so full of darkness and struggle, any art that promotes joy, community, and even some care-free curiosity is what I find to be most powerful in a healing sense.
What's your earliest creative memory?
In elementary school, my sisters and I put together a carnival in our backyard. My mom didn’t even know what was happening until she walked in the backyard and found it decked out in all kinds of carnival games, prizes, and dozens of stations. Of course, I did not recognize it at the time, but looking back I see it as my first full-scope, creative project.
What do you view as art that is not/has not traditionally been considered art?
Hair stylists have always felt like sculptors to me. They work with a very particular medium, move with intuition and skill to co-create with whoever is sitting in their chair that day.
What's your personal color palette?
Lavender, lime green, pale peach. Any colorway that would have looked right on a windbreaker from the ’80s is what I try to pull into all my digital and physical spaces.
What book have you given away most in your life?
Certain and Impossible Events by Candace Opper, a Pittsburgh-based author. For a minute, I bought it like it was shampoo or something. I was obsessed with it. I still am. I don’t even have my own copy any more because I gave it away, so now I need to buy it again.
