A little bit about André

What’s your most memorable Pittsburgh art moment from the last decade?
In 2019, Carnegie Mellon's Center for the Arts in Society hosted the Colour of Music Festival Orchestra, a group of Black and Brown musicians. That was impactful because it was the first time I’d ever seen a Black male flutist perform with a major orchestra in-person. I cried seeing someone like me on stage, reminding me that I did belong in classical music.

What Pittsburgh arts space do you recommend to visitors?
Anyone coming to Pittsburgh should experience our First Fridays. I enjoy the freedom: to wander up, get fed, experience art, and maybe see the work of someone familiar. You can be extroverted, or just do your own thing.

What artist did you adore when you were 15?
Lady Gaga because not only was she multitalented, but she was also someone advocating for LGBTQAI+ rights and celebrating the many ways we can be human.

Who is the last Pittsburgh-based musical artist that you streamed?
Filipina-American sound artist and flute player, tré seguritan abalos.

What was that last art that wowed you?
Sophia Marie Pappas’s “High and Mighty” show at Bunker Projects. When I walked in I was, like, “Oh, wow.” Just the vibrancy of colors.
