Book Launch: Pittsburgh Art in Public Places


Office of Public Art releases the guidebook’s 3rd Edition at a public party

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Office of Public Art invites the public to celebrate the release of the third edition of the Pittsburgh Art in Public Places: Downtown Walking Tour guidebook on Thursday, July 25th, 2013 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Wood Street Galleries, 601 Wood Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.  Attendees will meet artists represented in this new edition, indulge in cake and champagne, and receive a Pittsburgh Art in Public Places copy of their very own.  While this event is free and open to the public, RSVPs are appreciated.

Pittsburgh Art in Public Places, a free 185-page guidebook written by Renee Piechocki and Laura Zorch encourages residents and visitors of our region to discover the incredible range of art in public places in Downtown Pittsburgh. This book, with contemporary design by Little Kelpie and inspiring photography by Renee Rosensteel, leads tour-goers on self-guided experiences in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, Grant Street corridor, Retail District and Firstside, and new to this edition are sections on the North Shore and North Side.  In addition to art, noteworthy architecture, landscape architecture, and cultural objects are also included.

The guide is available for free at the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council office, at Visit Pittsburgh locations, and as a PDF at publicartpittsburgh.org.  The new guide includes works of art in public places that were installed after 2008 including:

  • Diamond Diamonds (2011) by Pittsburgh artist Carin Mincemoyer on Market Street.  Commissioned by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership with assistance by the Office of Public Art. 
  • Cell Phone Disco (2010), a sculpture that interacts with cell phone use by the artists Informationlab, located on Tito Way and commissioned by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
  • Several artworks commissioned by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh including Cloud Arbor by MacArthur winning artist Ned Kahn at the Buhl Community Park; Underpass, a rotating installation space on Federal Street; and (re)CARstruction by Pittsburgh artist Keny Marshall located in their parking lot.
  • Mobius Strip and Light Columns (2010) by Cerith Wyn Evans commissioned by K&L Gates for their lobby and entry at 210 Sixth Avenue.
  • Arpeggio (2011) by Angela Conner in the courtyard behind Heinz Hall. Commissioned by Heinz Hall.
  • A new photography installation (2013) by Laurel Beckman as part of her changing installation Phantasm in Strawberry Way.  Commissioned by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership.
  • The newly restored (2012) ceramic tile mural Pittsburgh Recollections by the internationally renowned artist Romare Bearden.  Commissioned by the Port Authority of Allegheny County and located in the new Gateway Center T Station.
  • Tribute to Children (2009), commissioned by the Colcom Foundation that transformed the former Manchester Bridge anchor with a viewing platform and sculpture by of Fred Rogers by Robert Berks.
  • Pittsburgh Burma House (2010) by Than Htay Maung and Khet Mar and Jazz House (2010) by Oliver Lake and Than Htay Maung, two of the House Publications by the City of Asylum Pittsburgh on Sampsonia Way.
