The Office of Public Art and the Sports and Exhibition Authority co-present an artist lecture by R.M. Fischer.
New York artist, R.M. Fischer will speak about his recently installed artwork Langley Observatory Clock located at the Allegheny Avenue Plaza in North Shore Riverfront Park adjacent to the Carnegie Science Center. Fischer's inspiration for the sculpture came from one-time Director of the Allegheny Observatory, Samuel P. Langley's invention in 1870 to standardize an accurate system of measuring and disseminating the exact time time. Known as "the Allegheny system," his invention was made available to the public from a clock at Pittsburgh City Hall, and by the end of that year, 42 railroads were using the uniform system.
Some of Fischer's completed public art projects include "Union Square Colonnade," (San Francisco, CA.), "Bell Harbor Beacon," (Port of Seattle, Washington), the "Kansas City Sky Stations," (Kansas City, MO,) "The Gateway Plaza Columns," (Cleveland Sports Complex, Ohio), and "Rector Gate," (Battery Park City, NYC), among others.
