But as bad as this catastrophe is, the specter of global climate change looms even larger as a threat to sustaining life on Earth. Despite overwhelming evidence -- species extinction and dwindling water supplies to mass migrations and mega-storms -- the public is still unclear what climate really means for them.

That is why we are calling on artists worldwide to participate in the CoolClimate Art Contest – the first online art contest exploring climate change in its many forms – how it is impacting our lives and what can be done to ensure a sustainable future for all of Earth’s inhabitants.

Artist brief: submit a work of art that explores our relationship with the climate – from clean energy jobs to pollution-free oceans – the subject choice is yours. You can submit a piece you’ve already made, or pass this email along and get an artist friend involved. Post your art on www.coolclimate.deviantart.com and you will be eligible to win prizes, be featured on the Planet Green Planet100 show and be displayed at key leader events nationwide on 10/10/10.

A panel of esteemed judges will select 20 finalists from hundreds of submissions. The finalists will then move to Huffington Post for public voting utilizing the Huffington Post’s innovative online social voting tool. Judges include:

Mel Chin (artist)
Philippe Cousteau (ecologist)
Agnes Gund (collector & philanthropist)
Van Jones (environmental activist)
David Ross (curator)
Carrie Mae Weems (artist)
Jackson Browne (musician) and Dianna Cohen (artist)
Chevy Chase (Comedian) and Jayni Chase (philanthropist)

Deadline: September 6, 2010

Pittsburgh, PA + Arbor Aid 2010: Reveal

Arbor Aid celebrates the possibilities presented to us by trees as resources within our city and region, and is a fund raising event for Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest.  Rather than chip or log urban trees that need to be removed, Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest encourages giving them a longer life by repurposing them as art, furniture, flooring and everything in between. Arbor Aid showcases artwork both decorative and functional created from salvaged wood.  This year’s event, Reveal encourages artists to reveal the beauty of urban trees.

This year’s event is special as we both mark a new chapter in our organization’s history with the unveiling of our new name and logo as well as honor the memory of our dear friend and supporter, John Metzler, creator of the Urban Tree Forge.

Deadline:  September 8, 2010 – to inform Caitlin Caitlin@pittsburghforest.org or 412.362.6360 that you would like to participate.  Installation of the artwork in the event space will be October 25-27.

Huntington, PA + 2010 Community Supported Arts

Are you an artist and interested in participating in the CSA?
Artists are encouraged to submit proposals based on artwork they are already creating, but with consideration for the format of the program.

A typical share will consist of a work of art/object of artistic production - multiples are encouraged, however creative ideas that translate your practice into this format or connect to themes like sustainability, farm, or food are also welcome. For example a run of screen-prints, series of small tea cups, run of photographs, a limited edition of vinyl 7", tickets to an upcoming performance or event, letterpress editions of a poem or short story, or even 50 small original paintings. Partnerships between artists are also welcome.

A few things to keep in mind:

While not everyone works small, think about how you could fit what you do into a 12" x 18" x 12" box. If you usually make giant paintings, think about how you could get a sample of your work into a collector's hands.

Not everyone is a maker of objects. For artists working in performance, film, sound, installation, etc., think about how you can format what you do into a commissioned object for collectors. Maybe musicians might opt for a limited edition recording, or filmmakers a uniquely packaged dvd. If your work is ephemeral, think about how to get it to your audience and vice versa.

Keep in mind that this is a commission for unique artworks. We may love what you are already making, but the stipend is not intended for the purchase of 50 commercial products.

Deadline: September 10, 2010
Information: http://www.articulture.us/artists/ or 2010 Community Supported Arts program please submit the following materials via email to: chad@articulture.us or by mail Chad Herzog, 1700 Moore Street, Huntingdon, PA 16652.

Savannah, GA + Writing on the Wall

The act of writing a list, sending a personal letter and even passing a note have become few and far between in the digital age. An e-mail or a text message, however efficient, no longer hold that personal touch. Handwriting is so specific to an individual that this form of expression within itself seems to have been left behind by contemporary telecommunications. Writing style is dynamic: an unfinished work to be modified, revised, and shaped over a lifetime. Writing on the Walls examines and celebrates the personal idiosyncrasies of the art of handwriting through various mediums: letters, notes, grocery lists, and other organic print pieces that continues to exist despite today's increased use of digital methods. We invite you to join us in our exploration of the ever disappearing art of the written word.

Eligibility: This juried exhibition is open to national and international artists (professional, emerging, and student).

Media/Genre: Open to works of all genres and media.

Entry Fee: You may submit up to three pieces for a non-refundable entry fee of $15. The entry fee may be paid online or with cash, check, or money order (checks and money orders should be made payable to DESOTOROW GALLERY).

Derbyshire, England + Sutton Scarsdale Hall Call for Concepts

With this call for entries, the Centre of Attention is seeking concepts and proposals for the re-imagining of Sutton Scarsdale Hall into a pavilion of postcontemporary curating.  This call is open to architects, designers, artists, curators and others. Concepts and proposals can be submitted as drawings, images or texts, by email to the address listed below.  All ideas, gestural, utopian or pragmatic are welcome.  At this stage we need to raise an initial £1,250,000. Fundraiser launch in London: late Autumn 2009

The skeletal remains of Sutton Scarsdale Hall continue to decay. A dilapidated wreck of a structure, you enter at your own risk.  In the very heart of England, Sutton Scarsdale Hall is to become the Pavilion of Postcontemporary Curating.

What is a pavilion of postcontemporary curating? First it will be a new international art facility set in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. The current Hall is a perfect exhibition/ performance space, lit from above, with high walls, neutral floor. It will be dedicated solely to new curating. Second, the Pavilion of Postcontemporary Curating will be a sculptural work incorporating the remains of Sutton Scarsdale Hall.  Third, the pavilion of postcontemporary curating will provide a home for the Centre of Attention and its archive.

The space will have a special remit to act as a 'patron' to working class artists and curators by providing these facilities for free.  It will facilitate new media production as well as old, it will have a library, archive, research facilities and study resource, studios and accommodation as well as a gallery dedicated to the history of the house.  A sculpture, it will become part of the regional landscape and act as a beacon to advanced ideas and art praxis in the regional and international scene.

Timetable for the pavilion: (2009) secure the remains of the building. ACT NOW to stop the decay; source architects through competition and re-imagine the site; recruitment and announcement of Advisory Board (2010) construction of sculpture/art centre (2011) completion and inaugural exhibition and residency.

Den Haag, The Netherlands + Marcello’s Art Factory/URM Project

An Urban Ready Made (URM) is a street, a building, a view, an object or an event in an urban- or industrial environment, where a conjunction of circumstances cause beauty and art. When an artist or architect declares this (with some ritual proceedings) art, it becomes an Urban Ready Made.

With the Urban Ready Mades Project we would like to bring art closer to people. Art doesn't have to be difficult to understand. You can find beauty everywhere and to enjoy art you don't have to visit a museum or an exposition. We hope our project lets people realize that they can find art and beauty in their own city.

Marcello & Els, the founders of the project, want to give other artists and architects a chance to declare an URM in their own surroundings and join this unique concept. This way there will grow a "gesammtkunstwerk" (a collective work of art) of thousands of URM's, which will go beyond borders. Firstly this is going to take place in the form of a virtual exhibition on the World Wide Web, crossing virtual borders. In the year 2010 it will become a traveling exhibition, kicking off in The Hague.

Tuscaloosa, AL + Statewide Arts Education Summit 2010

Alabama’s statewide arts education advocacy summit will take place at the Hotel Capstone in Tuscaloosa, this October with a focus on “Making it Happen.” In January 2011 the Merce Cunningham Dance Company plans a legacy tour through Alabama. Cunningham, Cage and Rauschenberg were the first improvisational collaborators to create “Happenings” at Black Mountain College beginning in 1930, and even in the early ‘70’s, “Happenings” were still very much alive. A “Happening” was an arts event (improvisational, multi-disciplinary and non-linear) created by both performers and audience. Boundaries disappeared and the audience became part of the art. Often things were left to chance with no script or plot. “Happenings” developed on the spot.

We are looking for presenters willing to go out on a limb to offer “Happenings” that will engage us in advocacy for arts education. That advocacy should include excellent teaching in the arts both sequential and integrated; building awareness in communities through strong partnerships with schools, and building legislation in our government to create policy stating the arts are essential for every student. We encourage you to envision a “Happening” structured to encourage learning about what you have to offer. That structure should engage a community of learners attending our summit, and enhance their capacity building for our schools, our communities and/or our government.

Break out Sessions will be 90 minutes. We need sessions on: how to integrate the arts, how to develop community partnerships, and how to influence policy makers. We need sessions on anything that enhances arts education, including technology, assessment, questioning, envisioning, strategic planning, networking, and more. We also need teaching artists to showcase their work. If you have an idea with the capacity to strengthen arts programs in Alabama – we want you!

Proposals should include objective, planned activities or improvisational direction, and a creative element that uses lessons learned or discoveries made to culminate your session. You may send narratives or lesson plans. Choose your own format for your “Happening” proposal. We may need to call you, so include current contact information.

Toledo, OH + Call for Presentation Proposals - Glass Art Society 42nd Annual Conference

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Studio Glass "Roots" in America
Glass Art Society 42nd Annual Conference
Toledo, Ohio, June 13-16, 2012

In recognition of the Toledo Museum of Art's role as the cradle of the American Studio Glass Movement, GAS will be holding its 2012 conference in Toledo, Ohio. They launched a movement that was propelled by an unprecedented collective enthusiasm and since has turned into an international phenomenon that continues to inspire experimentation. Toledo, America's Glass City, is welcoming again artists from around the world to celebrate the achievements of the past and to explore the seemingly endless possibilities of glass. Proposal submissions should recognize this historic year for studio glass, while reflecting the innovative spirit, diverse viewpoints, and current concerns of the Glass Art Society community at large.

SPARC, the Social and Public Art Resource Center in Venice, California, has inaugurated the National Call to Artists, a Web repository for images, songs, scripts, and ideas.
