Toby Fraley of Bridgeville was awarded the Mayor's Award for Public Art for his Pop-Up "Robot Repair" at 210 Sixth Avenue, downtown. Fraley's installation is so intricate and detailed that many believe that the shop is real.

Local artist, Fran Gialamas's photo assemblages are inspired by the steel towns in which she grew up. While some of the photos are from her family collection, Gialamas believes that her work "[a]long with being commemorative... tries to speak to today".

The Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) recently announced that Pennsylvania's Horn will receive one of the prestigious 2013 Annual APAP Awards. On Monday, January 14 at the Hilton New York in New York City, Horn will be presented The Sidney R. Yates Award for Outstanding Advocacy on Behalf of the Performing Arts. Horn is the first leader of a state arts agency to receive this award. Pennsylvania native and past recipient of the Commonwealth's Governor's Arts Award, Judith Jamison, dancer, choreographer and Director Emerita of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will also be honored. 2013 CITY OF ASYLUM/PITTSBURGH PRIZE
Deadline: 12/31/2012

City of Asylum/Pittsburgh announces a call for applications for its 2013 City of Asylum/Pittsburgh Prize. Writers from Western Pennsylvania, aged 30 and over, who have published at least one full-length book of poetry, fiction, or non-fiction, are invited to submit applications to be considered for the prize, which consists of a month-long, all-expenses-paid residency in Brussels, Belgium. Applications are due by Noon on December 31, 2012.

Resident artists are the core of the Arts in Education (AIE) program. In every community, there are talented professional artists – painters, actors, photographers, and more – whose creativity and imagination have the potential to change children's lives.

By participating in the AIE program, these professional artists bring their expertise and creativity to small groups of students in private or public schools, childcare centers, senior centers and other non-profit organizations. The resident artist works on projects of varying lengths, taking on the roll as mentor, facilitator and technical adviser.
