Corbett Supports Arts & Culture in 2013 State Budget Proposal

Governor Corbett released his 2012-2013 State Budget Proposal today.  It included flat funding for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts administrative line-item ($886,000), and Grants to the Arts line-item ($8.179 Million). At the same time, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission's line item was funded at $16.649 Million, a 5% cut from last year's appropriation. 1. To anyone who knows me, you know that the arts are, literally, my life. But we can't celebrate this support of state funding for the Arts Council in light of the rest of Corbett's budget: His proposal will "cut $330 million, or 20 percent, from 14 state-owned universities. Corbett also wants to reduce aid to Penn State, the University of Pittsburgh and Temple University by about 30 percent. Community colleges would see a 4 percent funding decrease. And the state agency offering financial aid to students would see a 6 percent cut." And last year, ""the state-owned and state-related universities had their budgets reduced by about 20 percent. Community colleges were cut 10 percent." Penny wise, pound foolish? www.wgal.com
