Artist Workshop: Reaching Your Audience:
Marketing Strategies

About the Panelists:

As Attack Theatre's Marketing and Education Manager, Rebecca Himberger has successfully run over a dozen marketing campaigns for Attack Theatre's Pittsburgh performances and national tours, launched a new website, designed ads and print pieces and coordinated their award winning in-school programs through partnerships with Gateway to the Arts, AEC, and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Prior to her work with Attack Theatre, Rebecca served as Director of Dance at Camps Airy and Louise, a Media Rep for Oceana's Mercury Campaign/Sierra Club, and as choreography intern for the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera in 2005. She currently serves as co-chair of the Pittsburgh Emerging Arts Leaders committee. Rebecca holds a BS in Psychology with a minor in dance and a certificate in Women's Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. When she doesn't have her face behind three different monitors at work, she can usually be found arguing with someone about the future of the arts in Pittsburgh or at a dance party.

Diane Wuycheck is a veteran Pittsburgh public relations professional with more than 30 years of experience. She has worked with Highmark and Equitable Resources, Pedal Pittsburgh (Community Design Center of Pittsburgh), Penn's Colony, Butler Count Convention and Tourism Bureau, Just Harvest's Harvest Celebration Dinner, HEARTH (formerly North Hills Affordable Housing), and many others. She also conducts spokesperson coaching and training, initiates editorial board visits, and manages press conferences, successfully showcasing the capabilities of the client and its business units, successfully placing stories with local and trade media.

This month Lea Donatelli, Program Manager, Office of Public Art will present information on the Pittsburgh Artist Registry and demonstrate how to create your own artist profile. The Pittsburgh Artist Registry is a free on-line database of visual, literary, and performing artists in southwestern PA. It is free to join and free to browse!

Last Days Cafe also provides a forum through which Pittsburgh's creative community can become more familiar with the resources available to them as they create new work, consider forming a new organization, or think about how, when and where to show their work.

Intellectual Property: Legal Considerations for the Savvy Artist

This presentation will outline the basics of U.S. intellectual property law, including copyright, trademarks and patents and highlight the ways to practically use each form of IP to protect your work and to avoid claims of infringement or misappropriation. You’ll also learn about Creative Commons, a way to share your work while retaining your rights, and you’ll hear some basic principles of contract law. As a partner of Morgan Lewis, Counselors at Law, and an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh Law School, Peter M. Watt-Morse brings more than 20 years experience to this engaging, content-rich presentation.

Contract Law 101: "So What are My Rights, Anyway?"

  Do you have an idea that you want to when entering a contract with a gallery, sponsor, or vendor? How do I know when an agreement is final? How do I license my work? This workshop will provide practical advice and legal strategies to protect your work and will provide information on how to enter sound legal contractual relationships. We will discuss the basic laws, how best to approach people with your work, how to ask for a contract, how to negotiate your rights, and how to enter confidentiality agreements.

This is the first of series of workshops in which Reed Smith attorneys will assist the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council supporting and promoting the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts program.


Last Days Café

  On one of the last day of every month (except December) from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM the theater's lobby turns into a casual "salon" buzzing with resource information, roundtable discussions, presentations, and performances targeted for Pittsburgh's creative community. Last Days Café also provides a forum through which Pittsburgh's creative community can become more familiar with the resources available to them as they create new work, consider forming a new organization, or think about how, when and where to show their work.

Chatting with friends and enjoying good food is the art of life. November's Last Days Café provides a forum for artists and friends to get together and share ideas and their signature dish. We encourage you to bring along your recipe and we will make copies to share with the group. Bring a main dish that serves 6-8 people. We supply drinks, desserts and set-up. Like minds should meet …and eat!

  Are you an artist or arts administrator with a legal question about your work? Bring your questions to our Arts Law Clinic! We'll schedule you 15-30 minutes with an attorney from American Eagle Outfitters to discuss your arts-law questions-from Intellectual Property, Corporate Law, Contract Law to Human Resources. Feel free to bring contracts, HR policies, works of art-anything that's raising legal questions for you! So as to maximize your time with an attorney, this clinic has no formal workshop presentation.

Artists & Communities Grants Workshop  
  Date: September 22, 4 - 6pm
  Place: Benedum Center, Rehearsal Studio, 719 Liberty Avenue, Downtown
  Presenter: The Heinz Endowments, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council
  Come join Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council for a brief overview of the Artists & Communities program and grant application process. This workshop is intended for artists interested in one-to-six month community- based residencies and nonprofit organizations or units of government that are interested in hosting artists. Discussion will include best practices and examples of successful projects.
   
  Artists & Communities supports residencies by artists from Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia at nonprofit organizations outside of their home communities throughout the mid-Atlantic region (Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia). Proposals for residencies that will occur between April 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010 are due Monday, December 1, 2008. Grants generally range from $5,000-$20,000. Artists & Communities applications/guidelines for 2009-2010 are available at www.midatlanticarts.org.

Last Day's Cafe: Monthly Meet -and- Chat for Pittsburgh's Creatives

  How do artists and other creative entities use the Internet effectively and efficiently? What free or inexpensive web resources and tools are now widely available to the public and are put to good use by Pittsburgh's Creative Community? How can you exploit what they have already learned about conceptualizing and maintaining a web presence?

Join us for a "cyber-tour" of web sites built and/or utilized by artists and other creative individuals to get words, pictures and sounds out about what they are doing. For this hour-long multimedia presentation, Teresa Foley, the Pittsburgh Creativity Project Director, will be joined by individual artists, arts venue-operators, and a member of an anonymous artist collective. These guests will share comments and stories about the choices they made and concepts they considered in order to communicate with a public audience.

The Fine Art of Marketing Fine Art: a Workshop for Artists

Income Taxes for the Individual Artist

This basic level workshop will teach you how to optimize tax planning as an independent contractor, self-employed individual or grant recipient. I Want to Shop My Idea, but I'm Afraid Someone Will Steal It!

Do you have a manuscript, a treatment, a song, or just a good idea that you would like to shop around to potential investors, producers, studios, collaborators, and others? This workshop will provide some practical advice and legal strategies to help you protect your work and avoid having it stolen.

   
  The workshop, part of the BusinessSkills for Artists Series, will review basic laws relating to this issue and will clarify what parts of your work are protectable by law. It will discuss methods of recording your rights in your works, how best to approach people with your work and how and when to use confidentiality agreements. The workshop will close with a discussion about what you can do if your work is stolen.
   
  Franklin B. Molin is a partner in the Pittsburgh office of K&L Gates, where he practices copyright, trademark, and entertainment law. He teaches Copyright Law at Duquesne University School of Law.
