PA Partners Grantees 2009-10

The programs and projects below were supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency, through its regional arts funding partnership, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA).  State government funding for the arts depends upon an annual appropriation by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania  and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.  PPA is administered in this region by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council.

Project Stream Grantees

Polish Cultural Council - $3000

To present the Warsaw Village Band, a "hardcore folk" group from Poland.

 

Gist Street Reading Series - $3000

For the Gist Street Reading series, which offers literary readings by poets and prose writers the first Friday of each month plus two Saturday craft workshops.

 

Kaminski, Kessler - $3000

To work with middle school-aged girls to re-draw a community map of the North Side and discuss how violence affects their lives, using silkscreen and video with polycarbonate structure.

 

Art All Night Lawrenceville - $2324

To present an all-night art festival that invites everyone to showcase one artistic creation in a free, unjuried art show staged annually in a vacant Lawrenceville warehouse.

 

SLB Radio Productions - $2324

For the Youth Expression Showcase, which features live music, poetry, essays and spoken arts performances by young artists, grades 5-12, on its weekly Saturday morning radio program.

 

Studio Capezzuti - $2234

For Puppets for Pittsburgh, a free puppet lending library that loans giant puppets to the non-profit community and hosts free community workshops to make puppets for the library's collection.

 

Rubin, Jon - $2234

To create a mobile video talk show that roams around the city of Pittsburgh interviewing ordinary people in unexpected locations.

 

Zapata, Alison - $2188

To convert two transportation buses into community "art buses", working collaboratively with the children, teens and parents of Hazelwood to design, paint and convert the buses.

 

Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival - $1874

For the Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival, an annual multi-genre concert series devoted to improving cultural life for Pittsburgh's Jewish and artistic communities at large.

 

Center for the Arts in Society - $1874

To support the Arts Greenhouse program, which sharpens songwriting skills of high school students; teaches the origins of African-American, hip-hop and rap music; and culminates in a public performance of their work.

 

LaSpina, Lazae - $1874

For the project "Whitney Avenue Art Gallery", which will transform a one-block section of Wilkinsburgh into a temporary, outdoor art exhibit through community workshops led by local artists.

 


Fiberarts International 2010 - $1874

To present Fiberarts International 2010, the 20th in a series of triennial juried exhibitions, which will take place from April 16- August 22.

 

Father Ryan Arts Center - $1440

For African American dance, music and visual art worshops for children and teens in McKees Rocks.

 

South Park Theatre - $1410

For the 2010 Children's Theatre season, comprised of five shows where approximately sixty local children participate and almost 9,000 people attend.

 

Dreams of Hope - $1380

To produce an original show by LGBT youth that will premier in Pittsburgh and tour to non-traditional venues throughout Allegheny County.

 

Fe Arts Gallery - $1380

To produce "Rock, Paper, Scissors," a project of three linked exhibitions in three Pittsburgh galleries, showcasing local and national artists.

 

Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Festival - $1323

For the 2009 festival, which increases awareness of Pittsburgh's Asian Americans through dance, music, visual arts, food and demonstrations.

 

Palaparty, Vijay - $1290

For "Nava Durga", a dance theater project that combines the classical Indian dance forms of Bharatanatyam and Odissi with elements of theater.

 

Chhandayan - $1290

To present two concerts of North Indian Classical music, featuring renowned international maestros with local talent to enrich the greater community.

 

Royal Tribe Music - $1260

For a symposium that uses wholesome "roots" hip hop culture to promote the region's diversity and raise awareness about scholarship, education and economic opportunities.

 

Pittsburgh Banjo Club - $984

For free, weekly public performances demonstrating America's Native Instrument, the banjo, playing early-1900's jazz and more.

 

Memorial Park Church - $980

To present a choral/orchestral concert of music from the early 18th century including music from the Harmony Society.

 

Cracow Szopka Project - $882

To produce workshops in Carnegie, Wilmerding and at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, culminating in a free annual Student Exhibition at the University of Pittsburgh.

 

Balmoral School of Piping - $840

To present a concert by the St. Thomas Episcopal School Pipe Band at the 3rd annual Balmoral Classic festival of bagpiping on November 7,2009.

 

Union Project - $780

For public ceramic exhibitions designed to further the craft education of city residents and build the careers of emerging ceramic artists.

Filipino American Association of Pittsburgh - $750

To produce a program of Philippine folk dances which can be showcased at multicultural, social or school events in the Pittsburgh region.

 

Mary Miller Dance Company - $720

To present "I look at You I See Myself", a collaborative performance featuring choreography by Mary Miller and story-quilts by fiber artist Tina Williams Brewer.

 

Wos, Joe - $675

For "Dr. Sketchy's Downtown Guerrilla Sketch Jam", which  takes its unique brand of life drawing to the streets with live, spontaneous themed sessions throughout Pittsburgh.

 

Pittsburgh Concert Chorale - $675

To present the March 2010 classical concerts, which will feature Arthur Honegger's "King David.'

 

Carnegie Mellon University, School of Drama - $650

For the "Pittsburgh Eeco-Drama Festival", which will present free, public staged readings of four prize-winning plays about ecological and environmental issues.

 

Tamler, Cory - $630

For a German-American festival in Pittsburgh featuring the production of an international theatre collaboration of two one-act plays, one by an American and one by a German playwright.

 

Polish Hill Civic Association - $580

For "Art What You Got", a one day festival of art, performance and art-related activities thatl includes an artist market, performances, hands-on activities and demonstrations.

 

Sembene - The Film and Arts Festival - $580

For "Sembene -The Film and Art Festival", a two-day event of film, music and art to pay tribute to the father of African cinema, Ousmane Sembene.
